As Essex Terminal Railway (ETR) commemorates its 120th year of operation, exciting developments are on the horizon for one of Windsor-Essex’s most reputable and long-standing corporations. In 2022, ETR made a significant move by relocating its headquarters to a cutting-edge facility in Tecumseh, ON. The new office boasts a contemporary and elegant design, with its crisp white walls and partitions exuding a sense of freshness and cleanliness. Nonetheless, it lacks the warmth, character, and heritage that the ETR and its subsidiaries are renowned for.
To address this issue, JMarketing joined forces with the ETR team to collaborate on designing new office walls to showcase all three companies – Essex Terminal Railway, Morterm, and Motipark – and celebrate their dedicated workforce and colourful past. Our goal was to create designs highlighting each company’s unique strengths and rich history while complementing the office’s sleek and modern aesthetic.

The project presented us with the daunting challenge of encapsulating 120 years of the client's history within a limited space of just eight frames. To address this challenge, the client provided a wealth of resources, including historical documents, photographs, and manifestos, which we meticulously organized during the storyboard process. Our primary objective was to strike a balance between the three companies, ensuring that none overpowered the others.
We adopted a strategic approach to achieve this, connecting each storyboard to the other using focal imagery. Our most powerful asset in representing the brand was the railway, which we hand-drew to depict Essex Terminal Railway's map line while incorporating the brand colours of all three companies. By doing this, we ensured that the design was visually cohesive and aligned with the client's brand identity.
In addition to creating visually appealing designs, we prioritized the authenticity of the historical narrative by using actual photographs provided by the client. This approach ensured that the final product was aesthetically pleasing and accurately reflected the client's rich history.
The new office exuded a modern and clean aesthetic, with industrial brick, brass, and steel accents creating a sleek yet edgy vibe. The conference room and guest services area was elevated by a tasteful carpet-like wallpaper, adding warmth and texture to the space.
To further enhance the existing modernity of the space, we suggested using double-framed acrylics for a sophisticated, lightweight, and uncluttered appearance. We resolved the lack of colour in the space by creating vibrant, on-brand designs that were printed directly onto the acrylic frames. The result was a striking juxtaposition of clean lines and bold graphics, creating an eye-catching visual display that perfectly complemented the overall design.
